Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles
Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California founded in 1927. The company General Moses Hazeltine Sherman developed Sherman Oaks. The company had subdivided 1000 acres of land that would eventually become Sherman Oaks and each acre was sold for $780. A group of homeowners in 1991 asked the city Council member to redraw the boundaries of Sherman Oaks as it was not uncommon for other neighborhoods to do the same and seek to change their names. It originally had been labeled Van Nuys. The Chandler Estates area also successfully seceded from Van Nuys and joined Sherman Oaks.
As of 2010 Sherman Oaks had a population of 56,677 people. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 82% non-Hispanic white, 5% Asian American and 3% African-American, 11% were Hispanic and other races made up less than 1%. The neighborhood has not been considered especially diverse with a high percentage of white residents. The neighborhood has a median household income of $69,651 in 2008, which is high for the city of Los Angeles but average for the county as a whole.
45% of Sherman Oaks resident's ages 25 and older have earned a four-year degree and the percentage of those residents with a Masters degree was high for the county. The school system is located within the Los Angeles, school district and includes Van Nuys middle school, Kester Ave., Elementary school, Chandler Elementary school, Robert A Milliken middle school, Sherman Oaks Elementary, Dixie Canyon Ave., Elementary, Riverside Dr., Elementary school with two charter schools: Ivy Bound Academy for Math, Science, and Technology on Morrison Street. There are two high schools Van Nuys high school and Grant high school. The private schools are Notre Dame high school, Buckley school and Village Glenn School.
The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park is in Sherman Oaks and is a popular site for family gatherings. The park has an auditorium, two lighted baseball diamonds, six unlighted baseball diamonds, lighted indoor basketball courts, lighted outdoor basketball courts, a children's play area, a 60 person community room, a lighted American football field, an indoor gymnasium without weights, picnic tables, a lighted soccer field, and lighted tennis courts. There is also seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool. The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks senior citizen center is also in the park grounds. The city also operates the Sherman Oaks Council Park, with arcade, batting cages, and miniature golf facilities, in Sherman Oaks.
